Mike McKelvey

Life is a strange fairytale and we are all characters stuck in between the pages. I try my best to create imagery and objects that reflect my personal life as well as the confusion of being alive. The world is filled with all types of characters and objects that shouldn't exist in the first place. To me, it is all a big blur and making art allows me to cope with thoughts and feelings that I would otherwise obsess over. Art has become a therapeutic necessity for me and it has become my savior. I am influenced by narritive and although it is often looked down upon I feel that it reflects my sense that life is just one big story with a beginning, middle, and ending.

I grew up as an army brat. I have had the luxury of living in Europe as well as all over the United States. One of the greatest places I have lived was in Alaska. I have had many friends and experienced things that some people will never believe if I told them. When looking back at my past I believe it was all leading up to me becoming an artist. I was influenced early on by artists/art such as Dali, Sean Cliver, Golden Book Illustrations, and MacDonalds Happy Meal bags.

With all this said, it is my intent to make art and spread the bewilderment and confusion that I feel to the masses. I hope to make objects and images that will last much longer than the time I have here on earth. Someday I know that the strange world that I cope with everyday will abruptly end but Hopefully a piece of me will live on through my child and art.
